We typically associate bananas with sweet dishes, right? As versatile as our fruit of the month is, however, it makes both sweet and savory dishes shine. Whether combined with zucchini or as an ingredient in a curry, there are plenty of ways to prepare bananas differently than what you are used to. Not that that is a bad thing, of course, because who doesn’t enjoy the classic banana split or the occasional fluffy banana bread. But we think it is about time to go for something different. So here are five sensational, yet easy recipes:

Spicy Banana Zucchini Balls



  • 1 cup of coarsely grated zucchini, squeezed dry
  • 1 large banana, mashed or chopped finely 
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tsp of turmeric
  • 3 tbs of honey
  • 1 tsp of curry powder
  • 2 tsp of crushed chili pepper
  • 1/4 tsp of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • vegetable oil for frying

Chicken Curry with Apple, Banana and Tomato



  • 2 Ibs of boneless, skinless chicken thighs, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed and diced 
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 1 apple, sliced but not peeled
  • 1 1/2 cups of tomatoes, diced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 2 1/2 tbs of curry powder
  • 1 tsp of cumin
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 2-3 bay leaves 
  • 1/2 cup of white wine 
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 2 tbs of all-purpose flour
  • 4 coups of cooked rice

Cheesy Ham and Banana Casserole



  • butter
  • 12 slices of white bread 
  • 8 large slices of deli ham
  • 4 bananas, sliced
  • 2 cups of shredded Cheddar
  • 2 cups of crushed potato chips
  • 6 slices of cooked and crumbled bacon
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • salt and freshly grounded black pepper to taste

Bacon Banana Cookies



  • 2 1/2 cups of sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp of baking powder 
  • 1/4 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1 1/4 cups of sugar
  • 2 large eggs 
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 4 bananas, mashed 
  • 1/2 Ib of crisp bacon, chopped

Farofa de Banana



  • 1 big onion, diced
  • 6 tsp of butter
  • 250g of manioc flour
  • 3 bananas, cut into thick slices
  • salt to taste
  • fresh parsley, chopped
